Keep Our Eyes Single to [His] Glory, and Our Minds Single to God

Nicki Brammer

When I was preparing to go on a mission, my parents asked me what scripture I wanted to put on my missionary plaque-- I suggested my favorite scripture (DC 88:67-68) and they recommended that I choose one a little more "missionary-ish" so I chose another one (I mean, there are so many good ones to choose from!) :) But I think the Spirit reminded me of that scripture in DC 88 just about every day of my mission in one context or another. During the Relief Society Zoom lesson this week, we focused on Elder Ballard's talk about prayer and I was brought to reflect again on my favorite section of scripture because, "The revelation was given after high priests at a conference prayed” separately and vocally to the Lord to reveal his will unto us concerning the upbuilding of Zion, and further, "The Prophet designated it as the ‘olive leaf’ … plucked from the Tree of Paradise, the Lord’s message of peace to us.”

I know we're all praying in this tumultuous time and seeking greater peace just like those high priests in Joseph Smith's time; there is so much going on in the world (and our little worlds!) that weigh down our hearts and spirits, but I offer up this gem of scripture for guidance and comfort from D&C 88:

"67 And if your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light, and there shall be no darkness in you; and that body which is filled with light comprehendeth all things.

68 Therefore, sanctify yourselves that your minds become single to God, and the days will come that you shall see him; for he will unveil his face unto you, and it shall be in his own time, and in his own way, and according to his own will."

I know the Lord loves us deeply and will guide us through our individual challenges and provide for us the peace that only He can give. Let us all keep our eyes "single to [His] glory," and our minds "single to God" and look forward to the great goodness up ahead!
